Welcome to Christmastime in Seneca Village!
Back in 1825, a small rural community was born on the rocky hills beyond the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. We were founded by free and emancipated African Americans who bought their own land with the dream of creating a refuge from the noise and discrimination of New York City. Seneca Village grew out of this dream, and our little village also attracted Irish and German immigrants who were seeking safety and comfort. This land wasn't just about having a place to call home, it was about finding our voice. We built schools, two-story homes, went to church together, and lived in harmony with one another and nature. We shared music, dance, and joyful traditions from across all our cultures. We thrived for more than 30 years - until the Parks Commission showed up with their own plans!
The story of The Midwinter Revels: Christmastime in Seneca Village is inspired by the historic village that once lived in what is now Central Park. Our production - written and directed by Michelle Matlock, with music direction by Megan Oberfield - focuses on joy, resilience, and love for community. Take a step back in time this holiday season with joyful spirituals, traditional folk tunes, and a delightful blend of African American, Irish, and German traditions!
WELCOME, YULE!
